Respiratory Disease
What can I do to treat upper respiratory disease for my rabbit without going to the vet?
I think my rabbit has upper respiratory disease but it’s early symptoms. I clean his cage regularly. Is there any way I can treat it before it gets bad without going to the vet?
You can TREAT it.
You can never CURE it. Your rabbit will always have it whether it’s due to bordetella bronchiseptica or pasteurella multocida.
There are many causes of snuffes (Nasal discharge, weepy eye, sneezing, sneezing with mucous)
Bordetella, Pastuerella, Syphillis, Staph, Something stuck in the nose, and much more are all causes. You can never know the true cause, even if your rabbit gets a nasal culture done. A Bacteria can be shown positive but can not be the true cause.
With that said, you can use antibiotics to TREAT it, so that the symptoms are gone or not as bad and the rabbit can live better. You can use Baytril or Chloramphenicol, both antiobiotics great for Upper Respiratory infections. You should research dosage and the amount of time you should treat for, usually it’s around 2 weeks. Just know that the symptoms can reoccur after you treat your rabbit, the rabbit will probably never be cured.
