What can be done to make therapy easier for people in need to seek and receive therapy?

Many people who could benefit from therapy are reluctant to receive therapy. Despite the various jokes, fears, and stigmas about seeing a therapist, researchers suggest therapy is beneficial.

There are many reasons why people are reluctant to receive therapy like you stated. The issues are more complex and not so straight forward. But to speak to your question of what can be done to make therapy easier for people in ‘need’ to seek and receive therapy here are a few of my opinions.

First of all, women for example are often associated with the primary caregiver and often have the core child care responsibilities. With that said many services offered to not provide child care – how can an adult seek treatment when child care may not be accessible or affordable. Perhaps therapy services could offer child care to an individuals children during therapy sessions.

I think a main reason why people may not seek treatment is simply because they i) do not want it, ii) don’t think it’d be beneficial/not in need.

Transportation I think is another issue. Whether you live in a rural community with services 20 minutes away or whatever not everyone has transportation that is either affordable and/or reasonable. Also, youth may not seek treatment although they may want it because of transportation issues. There parents may be able to take them but youth may not want their parents to know. Same goes for older adults who live with their parents and do not have transportation means.

Therapy is often expensive. Affordable costs would make it more accessible.
